The Amgen Tour of California was held from February 18-25, 2007. The Tour was held again this year with a few changes in the overall race route. I enjoyed the opportunity to watch the racers for the Prologue and portions of Stage 1 from Sausalito, CA to Santa Rose, CA. The world's top professional teams came and competed over a span of eight days over a distance of 800 miles. The route included the California redwoods, wine country and the beautiful Pacific Coast. The tour served a good purpose to raise funds for cancer care and treatment. Enjoy the pictures of some of the superstars of professional bicycle racing.

Prologue: Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, San Francisco, CA
The AMGEN Tour of California started off again with the Prologue in beautiful San Francisco. The intense 1.9 mile course starts at the Ferry Building at Pier 1 and goes along the Embarcardero. The route ends after a steep climb through Telegraph Hill to the finish at Coit Tower. The weather was great for a fine day of bicycle racing.

Levi Leipheimer takes off as the last rider.
Levi Leipheimer of the Discovery Channel's Team

Levi Leipheimer of the Discovery Channel's Team once again won the Tour of California Prologue with a time of 4:49.050. Jason Donald of Slipstream-Chipotle Team had the shortest time for most of the competition until Levi rode the last ride of the day. Jason came in second place followed by Ben Jacques-Maynes of Priority Health-Bissel. The Prologue is always fun to watch and get some pretty good pictures up close of the racers.

Stage One: Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, Sausalito, CA
The start of Stage One took place in downtown Sausalito, CA located in Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, CA. The course left Sausalito and included Panoramic highway and Highway One to Stinson Beach. The course continued along through Dog Town, Olema, Pt. Rayes Station, Tomales Bay and Valley Ford. The route then goes inland for a steep climb before finishing in Santa Rosa, CA. The pictures below were taken at the first King of the Mountain (KOM) point on Panoramic Highway just before heading downhill into Stinson Beach. Pictures also taken during the final laps of the race in downtown Santa Rosa including the crash that took place right in front of my viewing spot.

Nicolas Gates of Austrailia (#84), Enrico Gasparotto of Italy (#74), David Vitoria of BMC Team (#168) and Sven Krauss of Germany (#34) among the racers.

Graeme Brown (Rabobank) won Stage 1 of the AMGEN Tour of California. Despite the big pileup Levi Leipheimer remained the race leader.

Floyd Landis won the Inaugural Amgen Tour of California followed by David Zabriskie and Bobby Julich for 2nd and 3rd place in 2006. This year Levi Leipheimer won the Tour of California bicycle race.
