The Amgen Tour of California was held from May 15-22, 2010. The Tour was held again this year with a few changes in the overall race route. I enjoyed the opportunity to watch the racers at a few spots on the race route. The stage race started in Navada City, CA which has played host to some real classic pro/am criteriums over the years featuring 7 Eleven Team, Greg Lemond and Lance Armstrong. Once again the Tour of California had a world class field of racers and the best ever assembled in the US for professional bicycle racing. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures I took of the race. The weather was better this year since they decided to hold the race in May instead of the month of February. The Amgen Tour of California was highlighted by the return of Lance Armstrong. Lance is promoting the cause of fighting cancer. Check out the Lance Armstrong Foundation website online.

Stage One: Sunday, May 16, 2010 - Navada City to Sacramento, CA
I drove to Sacramento early in the morning to grab a spot close to the finish line to enjoy the final laps in Sacramento, CA. Saxo Bank’s J.J. Haedo challenged Mark Cavendish in the final few meters and it made for an exciting finish. Mark CAVENDISH Mark won the race followed by Juan Jose HAEDO and Alexander KRISTOFF in third place.

Stage Two: Monday, May 17, 2010 - Davis, CA to Santa Rose, CA

I traveled to Trinity Grade between Napa and Sonoma valleys to get a spot and watch the racers handle the climbs. Team Radio Shack was making some moves and the peloton began fracturing as the pace set in the field mostly by RadioShack along with the slippery conditions took their toll. Rabdou took the KOM points and stayed in front over Trinity Grade, a Cat.2 climb. The roads were slippery and it was pretty exciting watching the pros having a hard time climbing up the hair pin turns. The stage was won by Brett LANCASTER, CTT, followed by SAGAN Peter, LIQ and in third place Lars BOOM Lars, RAB

Stage Three: Tuesday, May 18, 2010 - San Francisco, CA to Santa Cruz, CA

I decided to watch the racers on the road again and took up a spot on Bonny Doon to watch the racers during the climbing. This was the part of the stage where the main contenders were going to make some serious moves. During this portion of the race route Levi rode hard with Lance Armstrong and Garmin’s Tom Danielson opening a 20-second gap on the climb that eventually grew to a minute. I managed to get some good shots of Lance. Lance was to eventually leave the Tour in the next stage due to injury. The winner of Stage 3 was Dave ZABRISKIE, GRM followed by Michael ROGERS, THR and Levi LEIPHEIMER, RSH. The overall winner of the Tour of California was Michael ROGERS, THR followed by David ZABRISKIE, GRM and third place to Levi LEIPHEIMER, RSH.
